Busy Buzz
The last few days have been quite busy for me. I attended the Chapbook festival at CUNY on both Monday & Tuesday (coming & going throughout the day) & then attended a panel/conversation on alternative education last night.
The chapbook festival was good. I heard someone refer to it as a "low-key" AWP. Rather accurate as there was a book-fair- but this one was much much smaller & more manageable & there were readings. I don't think there were any off-site readings or any drunkeness or "hooking-up" so that is prolly the biggest difference between the two. People didn't come to the chapbook looking crazed or with a desire to live some cheesy Vegas B-film life.
That being said, I think the festival being on Monday & Tuesday really limited or fractured the attendance, which isn't to imply that it was poorly attended- I was quite impressed on both days at the amount of the people, but if it had been on the weekend the room would have been packed which would make perusing chapbooks a pain, but reading attendance little better, as the audience for the readings tended to be small. But then again, who can attend a reading on a Tuesday afternoon at 2, which is when I read. Luckily there were about 10-15 people in the room & I thank everyone who came out, who said nice things about my chapbook, &/or the super-new poem I read. It's always a pleasure to read with label mate, Veronica, & to spend time with Tony (the other half of Flying Guillotine Press who recently moved to DC).
Here's what I left the festival with:
Bowling by Sommer Browning and Brandon Shimoda (Greying Ghost Press)
Poems by Dan Boehl (Greying Ghost Press)
Agriculture Reader
Unrequited Sonnets: bird to a feather by Nate Pritts
Descriptive Sketches by Nate Pritts (printed by J. Johnson in London)
Last Ride by Abraham Smith (Forklift, Ink.)
Is This January by Jai Arun Ravine (Corollary Press)
Lake M by Brandon Shimoda (Corollary Press)
Overall, the festival was a great time & you should look out for it next year! I'll write about the alternative education panel later.

Books, Coffee, Readings, Whatevers

Craig Santos Perez has out a chapbook on Corollary Press and a new book on Tinfish Press. I realized I haven't read much of his poetry, but I have read a lot of his reviews. I asked him to send a copy of his new book to Cold Front Magazine. I don't think any books from Tinfish have been reviewed on the site.

Thursday I went to the Wave Books reading at NYU. It was good and Tao Lin's poem was definitely a stand-out. I hung out with former and present New Schoolers Steve and Ben. We talked about how NYU has much better wine than the New School. What? Did you think we'd talk about saving the world or counting strophes?

Yesterday I went to Meghan's book release party/fundraiser at KGB. No where near as packed as I expected. It was a good reading with an excellent raffle for which yours truly was (for a change) amongst the winners. Here's the book bounty I won:
Stratification- Meghan Punschke (BlazeVox Books)
The Heart is a Quarter Pounder- Jeffrey Miller (farfalla press/ McMillan & Parrish)
Upon Arrival- Paula Cisewski (Black Ocean)
The Man Suit- Zachary Schomburg (Black Ocean)
Holy Land- Rauan Klassnik (Black Ocean)
Simply Rocket- Matt Hart (lame house press)
Afterwards, Dan, Meghan, Sylvia, and myself went out to dinner for a little Thai and converation. Somehow we were all very very funny. We laughed a lot and saited our collective hungers. Dan went home, Sylvia went home or elsewheres, Meghan & I both living in Chinatown stood on the corner of Hester and Chrsytie talking until the first drops of rain began to fall. Home we went.

This morning I bought coffee beans from Gimme! Coffee- the roast is entitled Leftist- I'm left-handed so that's an easy bias! I also lived on the Left Coast for a while-- speaking of the Left Coast, I have a poem in Eleven Eleven which is out of California College of the Arts (CCA). I haven't seen issue 5 yet as I just sent my address in to the editors(oops & sorry) but I'm excited to see it when it arrives in the mailbox. I'm also reviewing two books for Dusie so can't wait for those to come too- but I think they are coming from Sweden so I shan't hold my breath.
Lastly, I had a poem accepted in Barrow Street for their 10th anniversary issue. Pretty awesome. Okay I'm hungry and tired of listening to Blonde Redhead. I am now leaving my apartment (again).

Present Prescence Presents Past Flashed
Friday I eased on up out of bed and met Veronica at the Grand Central Terminal then we departed on a quick train trip to PS.1. There were many many highlights (some of which can be read on Veronica's blog) so I just suggest you go check it out yourself. It's definitely one of the better exhibits in the New York Metro area. One of the exhibits consisted of Complaint Choirs. I sent this link to my friend, Nicole, in HK and she said Hong Kong doesn't have one 'cause no one complains there- she's funny. I replied yeah no complains in the US either.

Friday night I met Deep Disco and we took in the Olympic ceremonies. Pretty awesome stuff.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I missed a picnic & a bike ride on Saturday (I still haven't fixed my bike) but went the poetry reading at Melville House which was quite good. Then I met up with my friend Ship and we went to O.C. to hear our astrologies... but the reader did them in groups of 6 to 8 so nothing too specific was obtained... although she mentioned that Aquarius are pretty much fucked for money culminating in a large-scale disaster on September 15th. Hmmm.... Should all Aquarius play the lotto on the 15th just to give the stars a cosmic chuckle??
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Sunday I streamed the USA vs China basketball game. The result of this is that I didn't make it to CA's BPC play/reading performance, but I maintained a shred of Philly cred by attending Juliette's Corollary Press reading. Juliette is super-sweet and just oozes warmth- writers must feel lucky to have her as their editor/publisher. Tisa Bryant read and we both know that we know each other but couldn't figure out how....Do you know how Tisa and I know each other?
