RENATO ROSALDO started writing poetry in English and Spanish while
recovering from a stroke in 1996. His first book of poetry, Prayer to
Spider Woman/Rezo a la mujer araña, received an American Book Award
(2004). Individual poems have won the El Andar poetry contest (2000)
and the Many Mountains Moving poetry contest (2005). He teaches at New
York University. As an anthropologist, he is the author of Culture and
Truth and Ilongot Headhunting, 1883-1974.

ARACELIS GIRMAY is the author of the collage-based picture book,
changing, changing (Braziller, 2005) & the collection of poems, Teeth
(Curbstone, 2007). Her work has been published in Ploughshares,
Callaloo, The Massachusetts Review, & MiPoesias, among other journals.
She has been awarded a Jerome Foundation Travel & Writing grant & a
GLCA New Writers Award for Teeth. A Cave Canem Fellow, Girmay also
serves on the board of the Acentos Foundation.

JARED HOHL is from Iowa. His fiction has appeared in The Apocalypse
Reader, The Agriculture Reader, The Washington Square Review, and
Torpedo, a literary journal based in Melbourne, Australia.

Handsome Black Cold Ocean Front Reading & Party Saturday

Black Ocean and Coldfront Magazine are celebrating the release of the new HANDSOME by co-sponsoring a poetry reading slash dance party at COCO 66 in Greenpoint on Saturday, February 27.

Weather reports are inconclusive.

I have an incomplete list of 09 Top Ten poetry books up on No Tells Blog.

It's incomplete because I completely forgot to mention two CSU books I loved:

I'm pretty sure Mathias Svalina's book on CSU will be out before the year is over too.

I also left off Justin Marks' chapbook, Vior Dire because my copy has not arrived yet, although I've heard him read from parts of it & loved it.

I've also heard Farrah Field read extensively from her book, Rising, but actually haven't read the entire book. I hope to buy a copy of it on Sunday though!

I'm sure still forgetting something but off the top of my head those were the glaring errors that should be added to the "list."

Klassnik Wag's Effing Press

Rauan Klassnik is interviewed about his first book. It's a good read and Rauan talks about meeting other poets while doing readings, etc which is cool 'cause that's exactly how I met Rauan. Black Ocean books donated some of their titles to a raffle charity which I won so I had read and raved about Holy Land before actually knowing Rauan. Max Blagg was born in England and has lived in NYC since 1971. Long recognized as an influential performer and highly respected writer on the New York literary scene, his work has appeared in numerous magazines, including Bomb, Shiny, Interview, Village Voice, Night, Verbal Abuse, Bald Ego, and Open City.

Max was recently a co-editor of the legendary arts and literary magazine, Bald Ego, with Glenn O'Brien.

He is on the visiting faculty of both the New School and SVA in New York City.

His most recent publications include “Don’t Look Back” a collaboration with Jack Pierson, “Marine - Ten Poems” catalog text for Alex Katz, “Things A Man Should Know”, with illustrations by Hugo Guinness.

Kristin D'Agostino is the side-project-queen of
participatory/dialogic/littoral/interventionist jewelery in New
Zealand. As she sees it jewelery is about relationships, so why stop
at the object? Why not make a relationship for her objects to live
within? She is actively recruiting North American participants for her
first bi-hemisphere, co-owned, brooch project called Rare Fungal
Behaviour & would very much like to see brooches popping up, like

Craig Foltz is a writer and multi-media artist who lives on the slopes
of a dormant volcano in Auckland, New Zealand. This one is not a test.

Daniel Lin has a chapbook, Tinder, from Nightboat Books, & has
recently published poems in Unsplendid, Notre Dame Review & The Jewish

David Lehman was educated at Columbia University and spent two years in England as a Kellett Fellow at Cambridge University. His books of poetry include Yeshiva Boys (Fall 2009), When a Woman Loves a Man (2005), The Evening Sun (2002), and The Daily Mirror (2000), all from Scribner. Lehman has edited The Oxford Book of American Poetry (Oxford University Press, 2006), The Best American Erotic Poems (Scribner, 2008), and Great American Prose Poems (Scribner, 2003), among other collections. He has written six nonfiction books, most recently A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs (Nextbook /Schocken, 2009). His other prose books include The Last Avant-Garde: The Making of the New York School of Poets (Doubleday Anchor), Signs of the Times: Deconstruction and the Fall of Paul de Man (Simon and Schuster), and The Perfect Murder (University of Michigan Press). He has received fellowships and awards from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts as well as an Award in literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He has taught in the graduate writing program of the New School in New York City since the program's inception in 1996. He initiated The Best American Poetry series in 1988.

Rope-a-Dope Press is a collective of former pugilists in South Boston who create fantastic handmade chapbooks, broadsides, and other collaborations between visual artists and poets.

So come meet us at 6:30 PM in the dank dungeon of the Famous Face, 165 W. 4th St. and 6th Ave., on Thursday November 20th. This isn't one to miss.

We hope you will join us at 7 PM on Thursday April 10th at Melville House Books for a celebration of the need for a second printing of The Agriculture Reader, a handmade arts annual. Editors Jeremy Schmall and Justin Taylor, and Ag contributor (and Melville House author) Tao Lin will read. Akashic Books editor Aaron Petrovich will perform A Kind of Madness. The spirit of the independent press will be venerated. Cans of beer will hiss when you open them. You'll be sure you've seen that guy before, but where? No, not that guy, Sarah—the one over there, by the front door, with the blonde. Maybe we went to school with him. Copies of The Agriculture Reader #2, as well as all Melville House Books, will be available for purchase at the event.
Melville House Books is located at 145 Plymouth Street in DUMBO. F to York Street.

Jeremy Schmall is the editor and founder of The Agriculture Reader, a small-run, handmade art journal, and the author of a chapbook, Underneath an Obnoxious Moon, and an artist book, The Slapdown. He's been published in Hotel St. George, Pilot, Juked, and Forklift, OH: A Journal of Poetry, Cooking, & Light Industrial Safety. He lives in Brooklyn.

Justin Taylor is the editor of The Apocalypse Reader, and Come Back, Donald Barthelme. His writing has been published by NPR, Paste, YETI, and numerous other journals, magazines and websites. Aaron Petrovich is a writer of fiction and theatre. He is the editor and cofounder of Hotel St. George Press and an associate editor at Akashic Books. His theatrical works have appeared inn the Midtown International Theatre Festival, Manhattan Theatre Source, and elsewhere. His debut novella, The Session, was published by Hotel St. George in 2007. A Kind of Madness is the audio portion of Agriculture Reader #2.
